An elderly cyclist has died in hospital after being hit by two cars in Mairehau, Christchurch yesterday.

The 76-year old man died at Christchurch Hospital shortly after midnight, police say.

He had been cycling on Hills Rd, between Acheson Ave and Shirley Rd, about 4.45pm.

Initial investigations indicated he had been travelling south when he swerved into the path of a car travelling in the same direction.

The bike was then propelled to the other side of the road and hit by a northbound vehicle.

The police serious crash unit will be "mapping the scene of the crash" today, a spokesman said.

The vehicles involved have been impounded for examination.

His name will not be released until next of kin have been notified.
