Police have appealed to the public for sightings of a man after a pedestrian was hit by a vehicle in central Christchurch last night.

Emergency services were called to Fitzegerald Ave, between Avonside Drive and Armagh St, about 7.20pm.

Both the driver of the vehicle and the pedestrian were taken to Christchurch hospital for treatment.

The pedestrian's condition is believed to be serious, but an update was not immediately available this morning.

The road was blocked for a brief period to enable a scene investigation.

Anyone who saw the incident, or saw a male in dark clothing carrying a backpack walking along Kilmore St onto Fitzgerald Ave should contact Detective Gary Absalom of Christchurch Police on 03 363 7648.
