Police are unable to say whether a body discovered in New Plymouth is that of missing teenager Nikolao Meafua.

The 16-year-old was last seen on June 10 after he left his Bell Block home following an argument with his mother.

Emergency services were called by a member of the public yesterday at 2.30pm after a body, believed to be that of a male, was found on rocks near New Plymouth's Coastal Walkway - opposite Kawaroa Aquatic Centre

New Plymouth police Senior Sergeant Allan Whaley expected more information would be available later this morning.

A post-mortem examination and formal identification is being carried out today.
