Police moved quickly to arrest an 18-year-old man after a teenage boy was attacked and stabbed multiple times during a fight on a Hastings street early on Sunday.

The 15-year-old victim was yesterday in a stable condition recovering from surgery at Hawke's Bay Hospital after he was stabbed in the chest, neck and back in Tamatea St about 1am.

Detective Stacey Bailey said it was likely he would be discharged from hospital this week.

Ms Bailey confirmed police had charged an 18-year-old man with wounding with intent to assault and grievous bodily harm.

He appeared in Napier District Court yesterday where he was remanded on bail to reappear on July 10 and granted interim name suppression.

The court also suppressed all details of the incident.

Ms Bailey said police were not looking for anyone else in relation to the assault but still wanted witnesses to come forward to help piece together what happened.
