Earthquake strikes on West Coast

A strong earthquake has been recorded near Haast on the West Coast this afternoon.

The 4.4-magnitude quake was 5km deep and was recorded about 20km south of Haast shortly after 4.30pm, GeoNet said.

It said the earthquake had a Mercalli Intensity of 6. Mercalli Intensity is the power of the tremor felt on the earth's surface.
