Police are seeking three men armed with garden tools who carried out a violent home invasion in Waihi overnight.

Detective Simon Everson of Waihi CIB said the men broke into a Mangatoetoe St address about 1.20am while the two residents were in bed.

"The offenders assaulted a male from the house and caused some damage to the home's interior before they have fled the property with a yet to be determined amount of cash and some cell phones," he said.

"A car was heard driving away, however we have only very vague descriptions of the offenders and no description of the car used in their escape."

Mr Everson said police were seeking the public's help to identify and locate the offenders.

Anyone with information or who may have seen suspicious people or a vehicle in or around Mangatoetoe St are asked to contact Mr Everson at the Waihi Police Station on 07 858 6200, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
