An alleged drink driver has struck and injured two young girls while reversing from a driveway in the Bay of Plenty.

The man, 43, reversed from an alleyway in Pohutukawa Avenue, Ohope, hitting the girls, aged four and seven.

Both children were taken to Whakatane Hospital where police said the four-year-old local girl was in a serious condition. The 7-year-old friend, from Rotorua, was in a stable condition.

The driver has been charged with two counts of drink-driving causing injury and will appear in the Whakatane District Court on Tuesday.
