An inmate has escaped from a prison van while it was parked at a Hawke's Bay petrol station.

The man broke out of a Prison Services van while it was stopped in Dannevirke about 5.30pm and ran away down some nearby railway lines, it was reported.

The prisoner was believed to be David James Lothien.

He is 186cm tall, was wearing green overalls and had a cast on his left arm at the time of his escape.

Corrections spokeswoman Karen Petrie said the prisoner was being moved from Spring Hill Prison in the Waikato to Hawke's Bay Regional Prison, it was reported.

Police were scouring the region looking for the man.

Police were handling the incident and an internal investigation will be held, she said.
