A man has been kicked by a calf while trying to help it.

The blow sent the 55-year-old man tumbling 10 metres down a bank at Tareha School, north of Napier.

A spokeswoman for the Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter said the man suffered suspected lower back injuries, and was flown to Hawke's Bay Regional Hospital for treatment.
