A hunter missing since Monday has been found today after walking out of Aorangi Forest Park 15km from where he became separated from his hunting party.

Michael Lindsay, 22, has been taken to hospital with minor injuries after he found power line contractors working at the edge of the park who called 111.

Police said the Upper Hutt hunter was not carrying a personal locator beacon when he ventured into the Wairarapa park.

Police and a Land Search and Rescue team had more than 50 volunteers and two helicopters, including an Air Force Iroquois, conducting an extensive search of an area around the Kawakawa Hutt.

Inspector Simon Perry said people venturing into the outdoors needed to carry emergency equipment so they could be found if they became lost.

"If they become disoriented but find their way to a hut they should remain there until help arrives," he said.
