A house has been severely damaged in Lower Hutt this afternoon after a fire ripped through it.

Fire services were called to the scene at around 2:30pm and required the assistance of five fire trucks.

It's believed one person was treated by ambulance staff for smoke inhalation.

A Fire Service spokesman says the blaze has been extinguished and an investigator is now at the scene.
