Christchurch fire crews are battling a large fire at a recycling yard today.

Emergency services were called to the blaze at Hornby's Southern Demolition Recycling Yard about 2am.

Southern fire communications shift manager Andrew Norris said a "massive" pile of custom board was alight.

"Southern Demolition has now got large diggers on site and they're breaking the heap down into smaller piles so we can extinguish it.

"We anticipate we going to be there for the next few hours."

No buildings were being threatened by the fire but some residents would wake to smoke in the air, Mr Norris said.

Environment Canterbury was monitoring the smoke levels, he said.
