The body of a 19-year-old man was found in a drain in a Christchurch park this afternoon, but police believe his death was not suspicious.
Police said they were called to South Hagley Park, near Deans Ave, about 12.40pm today by a member of the public.
The body was found in an open, water-filled drain.
The site was cordoned off and a full forensic examination was carried out, but Christchurch police investigating the death say the death is not believed to be suspicious.
Detective Senior Sergeant Darryl Sweeney said the body was located in an open, steep-sided drainage canal, which had about 30 centimetres of water in it.
He said it was likely the body was in the water for several hours before being discovered.
The name of the dead man will not be released until he has been formally confirmed and next of kin have been notified.
The matter has now been referred to the Coroner.
