A wheelchair-bound man has died in a house fire in Napier this morning.

A Fire Service spokesperson said crews were called to the blaze at a two-bedroom flat on Riverbend Road about 5.08am.

The house was "well involved" in fire on arrival.

Four fire trucks were called to the scene and the fire was extinguished.

Napier Stations Officer Peter Draper said fire crews jumped straight into action on arrival.

"There was a gentleman that was wheelchair-bound in the building, so the brigade immediately attempted a rescue, while doing fire knock-down at the same time."

Mr Draper said they found the man in the living room once they entered the home.

It is not believed anyone else was in the address at the time of the fire.

Fire safety officers were investigating the cause of the fire.
