Six fire trucks were called in to put out a kitchen fire in the newly-opened Ponsonby Central on Ponsonby Rd in Auckland this morning.

Fire service spokeswoman Nicole Bernard said an alarm activation alerted them to the fire at 10am.

Two fire trucks were sent to the scene, but on arrival requested two more.

Ms Bernard said the blaze was out by 10.20am, but because the sprinkler system was set off, two further appliances were called in from the salvage centre to help mop up the water.
