Auckland police are concerned about a severely autistic man who has gone missing from a residential care facility in Onehunga.

He has been gone for several hours, which was concerning due to his severe intellectual disabilities.

Police Communications Shift Commander Matt Rogers said the man was 25-years-old, but looked about 15.

He said he got stressed, struggled to communicate with people, and made barking noises when distressed.

He was described as a Pacific Islander, 169cm tall and of thin build.

Mr Rogers said the man had a tendency to jump over fences trying to find food.
