A fire in Tauranga, possibly started by an explosion, is reportedly heading towards Esmeralda and Dingadee Streets in Welcome Bay.

A Northern Communications Centre spokesperson said there had been multiple calls about a car fire and a scrub fire on Ranganui Rd.

A Bay of Plenty Times reader said an exploding car had started a bush fire.

A witness said that three tenders, rural and "some sort of special fire engine" had arrived.

He said the fire was rapidly heading down the hill towards Esmeralda and Dingadee Streets.
