A man who jumped from a cliff towards a water hole and missed has been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries.

The Kapiti man, aged in his 20s, crashed into a bank next to the river instead of into the water at Reikorangi, east of Waikanae, on the lower North Island last night.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter landed on a rock bed near the injured man who was being cared for by four paramedics at the scene.

"A friend said the man jumped from near the top of a hill and landed on the bank of the river instead of the deep water hole,'' Life Flight crewman Dave Greenberg said.

"The jump was from about 15 metres above the stream.''

The man was flown to Wellington Hospital with multiple injuries about 6.15pm.
