Police have named the woman who was hit and killed by a train in Christchurch on Saturday morning.

Christchurch woman Sheena Louise Wright, 41, was killed when she was struck by a train near the Hornby shopping complex at about 4.50am.

It was called in to police at 9.40am by a member of the public.

Detective senior sergeant Darryl Sweeney said investigators are continuing inquiries after speaking to associates of the deceased and establishing Wright's movements before the accident.

The death is not being considered as suspicious and has been referred to the coroner, police said.

Anyone who saw or heard anything in the area overnight is asked to come forward.
