A head-on car crash in the Bay of Plenty today killed a woman and left six other travellers, including two children, in hospital.
One, a boy aged 14, was in a "very critical" condition tonight.
Emergency services were called to State Highway 2 near Poplar Lane, in Te Puke, shortly after 4pm.
The woman, aged 33, died at the scene, and the six survivors were taken to Tauranga Hospital. The 14-year-old was later flown to Waikato Hospital. The other people had minor to moderate injuries.
St John spokesman Norm Ngatai said of the accident: "That was a major one for us. We had quite a few units on the scene - three ambulances and two managers ..."
The Fire Service cut free one of the injured from the wreckage, as well as the body of the woman.
