An Australian soldier working with the New Zealand Army has died after being struck by a truck and trailer in the early hours of this morning.

The man was walking on State Highway 1 near Burnham Military Camp when the accident happened around 12.30am, the NZ Defence Force has confirmed.

A spokesman said the soldier was not on duty at the time the accident occurred.

The Serious Crash Unit, Commercial Vehicle Investigation Unit and local police have been investigating the cause of the crash.

Next of kin have been informed, the NZDF said, but no further details are available.
