An arrest has been made following the discovery of a woman's body in Invercargill this morning.

Police have launched a homicide investigation into the death of the 38-year-old female who was found in a bedroom in the Haven Southern Skies Lodge on Tyne Street.

Authorities were sent to the address at 10.00am this morning.

Inspector Olaf Jensen says a local man is being spoken to.

"This afternoon we have taken a 30-year-old male into custody, and he is presently being spoken to in connection with the victim's death."

Olaf Jensen says the man was known to the woman.

He says little can be revealed about the woman until next of kin are advised, but he did reveal one fact to Newstalk ZB: "The victim was a resident at the accommodation."

The lodge is not making any comment.
