Firefighters have extinguished a scrub fire that forced the evacuation of an apartment block in Auckland.

A Fire Service spokeswoman said a thermal imaging camera was used to scan the outer wall of the Rossmay Terrace building in Kingsland to ensure there was no further fire danger.

It is not known what caused the fire, which was near railway tracks, she said.

Residents have returned to their homes.
