Two men have been seriously injured in a single-car crash in Central Otago this afternoon.

The men, believed to be overseas tourists, had been travelling through the Cromwell Gorge between Cromwell and Alexandra when the car crashed about 4.50pm.

Both men suffered serious injuries.

Police closed State Highway 8 while ambulance staff treated the men.

They were due to be airlifted to hospital, and the road was expected to be partially reopened about 6.30pm.

Police said there was no indication what had caused the crash at this stage.
