A 75-year-old man has died while hunting in thick forest in Fiordland.

The man's teenage companion raised the alarm about 5pm last night when he made his way back through bush to Gunns Camp, Hollyford Valley, night after the hunter collapsed.

A helicopter was dispatched from Te Anau with a doctor and police staff, but when they arrived at the scene the man was pronounced dead.

The helicopter and long line were used to pull the body from the bush.

Sergeant Tod Hollebon said the teenager did very good job marking a trail out to the road and assisting the search and rescue effort.

The death was not suspicious and has been referred to the coroner.

The deceased man's name will not be released until family members have been advised.
