Two people have been airlifted to hospital after a three-vehicle collision on SH1 in the central North Island.

A car travelling south hit the side of a horse float before crashing into another car just south of Atiamuri about 2pm.

A rescue helicopter arrived shortly before 3pm and was there for about 20 minutes before taking a patient to Waikato Hospital. A second rescue helicopter was also being called to take another crash victim to hospital.

Traffic was diverted as emergency services cleared the scene.
