Fire units are fighting a grass fire in Hawke's Bay that threatened several homes.

Families fought flames with spades, garden hoses and feet to protect their Havelock North lifestyle-block homes.

Fifteen fire units went to the Lane Rd grass fire on steep hills on the outskirts of Havelock North.

About 4ha of knee-high grass was burned in strong wind, with flames coming within 30m of two homes and threatening others.
