Ashburton police were at a Cass Street house today, where a major investigation is underway into the death of a woman.
The woman's body was discovered in the early hours of Saturday morning. She was pronounced dead by ambulance staff called to the house.
Police say identification has not been completed and no name has been released; she was described as local. It is believed her body is still at the house, where a scene examination is taking place.
Police say they are making inquiries into the circumstances of her death and would like to hear from anyone who may have information.
The house on Cass Street remains under guard. Cass Street between Peters and Cox Streets has been cordoned off and scene tape seals off a white house, with one car parked in the driveway and another on the road.
Neighbours are able to come and go but other traffic is restricted on the street, just one block from the main road and a major supermarket.
Earlier in the day four forensic officers were seen at the house and a crime scene investigation caravan is parked across the street from the house under guard.
On Facebook, friends of the dead woman have already set up a tribute page, with many messages of love and support left.
