Police have released the name of the man found dead in Tauranga Harbour on Saturday.

He was 29-year-old Ira Shephard from Tauranga.

Shephard was last seen by an associate on Friday, November 30 and police are trying to trace his movements from around this time.

Police say it is not clear how long the body, found by a tugboat near Mt Maunganui Port, had been in the water and are appealing for information about his movements.

A post mortem examination has been carried out this afternoon and his death is still being treated as unexplained at this stage.
