A woman ran back into a burning garage yesterday to retrieve her car, minutes before the rest of her house was engulfed in flames.

Fire crews and emergency services rushed to the blaze in Chantal Place, Papakura, shortly before midday.

No one was hurt, however, a woman narrowly escaped the flames as she ran back into the garage to retrieve her vehicle, the back of which was left badly damaged and melted.

Neighbour Ken Ryder said the fire appeared to have started at the back of the garage before it ripped through the house.

Mr Ryder arrived as the woman was driving the vehicle on to the road.

"The woman had just driven out of the garage and the back of the car was all melted and looked totally munted."

Northern fire communications shift manager Megan Ruru said it was not yet known what caused the blaze.
