Firefighters are at the scene of a blaze in central Christchurch where a block of flats caught fire this morning.

The Fire Service was called to the block of five flats in Ruskin St at 8.15am.

It is not known how one of the flats had caught fire.

A Fire Service spokesman said they had received a number of calls about the fire.

One person had been inside the flat but was told to evacuate, he said.
