A man who sparked a massive manhunt across Auckland after shooting at a police officer has been sentenced to eight years in prison.

Murray Toleafoa, 30, was arrested by armed police in a dramatic scene outside a central Auckland supermarket carpark in June.

Days earlier he had fired at a constable who stopped his car on Mayoral Dr in Auckland's CBD near the central police station.

Toleafoa's girlfriend Nadia Ball, 20, was also in the car.

He leaned past her from the passenger seat and used a pistol to shoot at the constable. The bullet passed so close it caused burns to the skin on his forearm.

Toleafoa and Ball then fled, their car found abandoned in Mt Eden later that day.

He pleaded guilty to discharging a firearm at a police officer and was sentenced in the High Court at Auckland this morning.
