A skydiver has been killed near Wanaka.

The 38-year-old man fell to his death near the town's airport about 4pm today.

He landed on the golf driving range, across State Highway 6 from the main entrance to the airport, police said.

Police said the man was an Italian national and he died while filming a paid tandem skydive.

Police said it appeared the man had difficulties with both his main and reserve parachutes, and died when he hit the ground.

The incident was witnessed by several members of the public.

No-one else was injured.

Police and the Civil Aviation Authority are investigating, and the death has been reported to the Coroner.
