An 82-year-old man was killed and four people were injured in a head-on crash in Otago this afternoon.

Police said a Toyota SUV collided with a sedan car at 1.20pm on State Highway 1 near Kuriwao, east of Clinton.

The front-seat passenger of the sedan died at the scene, police said, and the female driver was taken to Dunedin Hospital with unspecified injuries.

The three passengers in the SUV all suffered serious to moderate injuries. Two were taken to Dunedin Hospital by helicopter and one to Clutha Health First Hospital.

The driver of the SUV was not injured.

Police said the road was closed and was not expected to open until this evening. Detours were in place.

The serious crash unit is investigating.
