Former National Party chief of staff Richard Long has been appointed to the board of TVNZ.

Long was a journalist for 20 years before spending a decade-long stint as editor of the Dominion.

He spent two years as chief of staff for National leaders Bill English and Don Brash after leaving the paper in 2002.

Broadcasting Minister Craig Foss said Long would bring his industry experience to bear in his role at TVNZ.

"Mr Long's media career will enable him to contribute his lengthy practical experience to the work of the TVNZ board."

Mr Long was appointed an officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to journalism in 2011.
