Police are searching for a man who assaulted a shop keeper in Mount Maunganui this afternoon.

The man walked into Arataki Superette wearing a mask and pushed over the female store assistant. She hit the store's panic alarm, police said.

It was still too early to say if the man took anything.

Police are now scouring the area for the offender, who is believed to have acted alone.

The superette has been targeted in several similar incidents, including a knifepoint robber earlier this year.
