The sole survivor of the fatal crash near the Waitomo Caves is preparing to head back to the United States.

Kirsten Steinke was involved in the crash which killed her newly wed husband, Kallan Stithem, last month.

She's since been recovering at Waikato Hospital and has been moved to a new ward in preparation for her move back home.

Her parents, Jim and Gerri Steinke, say the care Kirsten received in the High Dependency Unit has helped improve her strength, making her ready to come home.

They are thankful for all the support they've received.
