Dozens of old bras have been rescued from the bottoms of drawers and wardrobes to create a huge pink ribbon in support of today's breast cancer appeal.

The ribbon on Wellington's waterfront contained about 50 bras by midday, with organisers hoping for another 50 to complete the symbol of the Breast Cancer Foundation by the end of the day.

The fundraiser is being held to coincide with the Breast Cancer Foundation's Pink Ribbon Day - its main street appeal during International Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Birgitte Lloyd came up with the idea last week after she found some old bras during a springclean.

"I wanted to do something that would make a stand for breast cancer like, 'boom, here it is - we're raising awareness, so let's do something that people can see."'

She said people had brought in their own bras and some had been collected from other people.

The group had so far raised about $200 for the Breast Cancer Foundation. They were also selling cupcakes and holding a raffle to raise funds.
