Police are investigating a burnt out vehicle in Kaikoura which they fear may have a body inside.
Blenheim detectives, ESR officers and fire investigators have started a scene examination at a location on Kiwa Road, north of Kaikoura, where the badly burned vehicle was located earlier today.
Police believed the vehicle may contain a body but that was yet to be confirmed.
"While it is too early to determine exactly what has happened, Blenheim police would like to hear from anyone who has been in the area or who has information that may be relevant to the investigation,'' a spokesman said.
The scene had been cordoned off, a police spokesman said but would not comment further.
Kaikoura's wine and food festival, Seafest was held in the coastal tourist town at the weekend.
Police said today the event was tarnished by high levels of drunkenness and drink-driving.
A total of 22 arrests were made, including for drug charges, disorderly behaviour, fighting, assaulting police, and liquor ban breaches.
