Police are hunting a man who tried to kidnap an 11-year-old girl in Kapiti on Monday.

The attempted abduction happened between 6.45pm and 7pm as the girl was walking on Matatua Road in Raumati Beach.

A car drove past and stopped ahead of her, blocking her way on the footpath.

A man then got out of the driver's side door and told her to get in the car, police said.

The girl got past him and ran away.

Police said the offender was described as a man of about 40-years-old with a tall, muscular build, low voice, dark brown eyes and dark skin.

He was bald with a thin dark moustache, a scratch on the left side of his face and a tattoo on his upper left arm resembling a taniwha, police said.

To give information call Kapiti police on 04 296 6800 or the anonymous Crimestoppers line 0800 555 111.
