Police have identified the body of a man found dead in Mt Wellington, Auckland on Sunday.

Tamati Tupe, 23, of Mangere, was found dead on Hillside Rd about 11.30pm.

A 17-year-old man has been arrested and charged with assault in connection to the death, and police say further charges are possible.

A post-mortem examination has been completed on the body, however police said they will not be commenting further on the nature and extent of injuries.

The police investigation will now focus on speaking to residents of nearby houses in relation to any activity on Panama Rd on Sunday evening or early Monday morning.

It is believed at least three other people were involved in the incident.

Detective Inspector Dave Lynch said police urged anyone with information about these people or who saw or heard any activity in the area, or had contact with the victim on Sunday, to contact police on 09 259 1261 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
