Eighteen pokie machines have been shut down at Otara's Galaxy Function Centre after its licence was cancelled for non-compliance.

Internal Affairs said the venue was being used mainly for the operation of gaming machines and revenue from them "greatly exceeded'' bar sales.

Internal Affairs cancelled its licence in May but venue operator, KTJ Investments Limited, appealed the decision and was allowed to continue operate in the interim.
