A man who was shot in the leg before being dumped in a hospital carpark is in a stable condition.
The YouthTown Rescue Helicopter was called yesterday to take the 22-year-old from Taupo Hospital to Rotorua Hospital.
A hospital spokeswoman said the man had a comfortable night.
The man was left in the hospital carpark with a gunshot wound to his right leg.
He was stabilised by hospital staff before being flown to Rotorua.
"This man has told us he was shot with a shot gun but is not providing any information beyond that," said Detective Sergeant Tony Manunui of Taupo police.
"We believe the incident took place in the Mangakino area and it is important we establish exactly what has happened and why.
"Police will be talking to the man's associates today in an attempt to establish more details."
The police are asking for anyone with information about the incident to contact Taupo police on 07 378 6060, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
