An extensive search has been launched for a man missing since heading into the sea at Takapuna Beach more than a day ago.
Police said the man in his early 50s went missing after entering the water at the north end of the beach on a paddle board early yesterday afternoon.
His board was found by searchers a short way from where he got into the water.
An extensive shoreline and sea search had failed to find any sign of the missing man, police said.
They were considering using navy sonar equipment to help with the search. Divers had not yet been used due to the poor visibility in the water.
The man was described a 1.9m tall with a thin, muscular build and short greyish hair.
Police appealed for anyone who saw the man enter the water or fall from his board to come forward.
To give information call North Shore police on 09 477 5000.
