A woman has been abducted and sexually assaulted by a man who coerced her to get into his car at Motueka.
Police said the woman was walking home along High St at about 12.15am this morning after socialising at a local bar.
A man in a "square shaped" four door sedan pulled up alongside her and asked for directions.
She agreed to get into his passenger seat to show him where to go as he seemed lost and confused, police said.
"When she got into the car she said the man attacked her, forced something over her face and then tried to take her clothes off."
The woman managed to fight off the driver and flee near Wharf Road at the south end of High St, police said.
She suffered minor injuries in the incident.
The alleged offender was described as a man in his 30s or 40s with straggly brown hair. He was wearing a brown jacket.
His car was last seen heading towards Mariri.
