Heavy fog has hampered the search for a person seen struggling in the Waikato River last night.

Senior Sergeant Rupert Friend said a woman jogging across Fairfield Bridge in Hamilton saw someone in the river around 8pm who appeared to be in distress.

The jogger called emergency services from a nearby address, Mr Friend said.

Fire Service, St John Ambulance and police combed the riverbanks, and the police boat was launched, however the search was suspended about 10pm as fog restricted visibility on the river.

The woman described the man as a young male wearing clothes with black sleeves.

Anyone with information is asked to phone the Hamilton Central Police Station on 07 858 6200.
