Fire safety staff will today investigate a huge tyre fire on the outskirts of Invercargill.
Firefighters received multiple calls to a large pile of tyres on fire at the intersection of Tramway and Rockdale Rds just before 4pm yesterday.
Two pumps and two tankers battled the blaze at its height, a Fire Service southern communications spokesman said.
The fire, which sent a column of thick smoke billowing into the air, was brought under control in about four hours.
Meanwhile, fire safety staff were also investigating a cottage fire at Diamond Harbour on the Banks Peninsula in Canterbury.
The cottage was well ablaze when firefighters arrived after 2am today.
Nobody was in the cottage at the time and the fire was quickly brought under control.
