Sanitarium is urging consumers not to "freak out" as it works to relocate its Marmite manufacturing facilities to a safer part of the Christchurch site.

However Prime Minister John Key told TV3 that he also likes the Australian-made rival Vegemite.

"I looked at 10 shops in Christchurch today with no luck. There is no way I can afford to pay the black market prices for three or four months. I am so annoyed at people for buying box loads."
