A man has been killed after being hit by a truck in central Auckland this morning.
Emergency services were called to the Newton Road overbridge about 6.50am.
A St John Ambulance spokesman said the man, whose age was unknown, was dead at the scene.
Police said the left-hand lane on the overbridge is currently closed and is expected to remain closed for some time to allow investigators to examine the scene.
Motorists are advised to avoid this area if possible, particularly when exiting the motorway at Newton Road and travelling east from Ponsonby Road.
Meanwhile a person was seriously injured after smashing their car into a lamppost in east Auckland overnight.
Emergency services were called to Aviemore Drive, Howick, about 12.45am.
Police said the vehicle appeared to have struck two parked cars before smashing into a light pole.
The driver of the car has been hospitalised with serious injuries, while a passenger suffered less serious injuries.
The road was closed but has since reopened.
The Serious Crash Unit is investigating the accident.
The man is the fifth pedestrian to be killed on New Zealand roads this year.
