Search and Rescue teams looking for a tramper missing in Nelson's Richmond Range have found a body.

It is believed to be that of missing tramper Sharny Abbott, 23, of Richmond.

The body was found about 5.50pm in the Roding River, police said.

Teams have been scouring the area all day in search of Mr Abbott, who was expected to return from a tramp on Sunday.

He was last seen at the Starveall Hutt about 1pm on Sunday.

There had been heavy rainfall in the area.

Mr Abbott was well-equipped and had outdoor experience, having previously been in the army.

A formal identification had yet to be carried out and next of kin had been told.
